Carmilla

Stifled by patriarchal norms, Laura's repressions are awakened by the elusive Carmilla, whose arrival coincides with a deadly plague threatening the village with blood and terror.

25 years before Bram Stoker unleashed Count Dracula into the world, there existed the original feminine vampire, to whom Dracula was but a masculine response.

Carmilla is a psychological vampire story exploring themes of repressed identity, forbidden sexuality, and gender roles within a society governed by a patriarchy enforcing rigid, conservative norms.

This refreshingly unique take on the vampire is rich with lore, giving bold and realistic shape to the story's gothic atmosphere. Characters are motivated by primal fears and desires, and haunted by conflicts in the psyche. Buried beneath the surface is an exploration of class conflict, and a war between religion and nature.

Like Mulholland Dr., Black Swan, and Persona, Carmilla is a story about duality and dopplegängers, exploring the tension between conscious and unconscious. It draws upon the haunting atmospheres of Rosemary's Baby and The Shining, where the psyches and conflicts of characters manifest externally, creating powerful metaphors to represent the indescribable realm that is the mind.
